Before you punch in the numbers, guess roughly what the answer should look like. If you're multiplying 48 by 21, you know the answer should land somewhere around 1,000 (50 × 20). If your calculator says 10,080, you know instantly something went wrong — probably a misplaced decimal or a mistyped digit — before you've written it down as your final answer.
This habit matters more on tests than anywhere else, because a rushed keystroke under time pressure is exactly when errors slip in. Teachers see this constantly: a student does the setup correctly, fat-fingers a digit typing it into the calculator, and loses points on a problem they actually understood. A five-second estimate catches that before you move on, which is far cheaper than losing the point permanently.
A huge share of "calculator got it wrong" complaints are actually order-of-operations mistakes. Multiplication and division happen before addition and subtraction, and anything in parentheses happens first. If you're not sure how your calculator will read a long expression, break it into smaller steps or add parentheses yourself rather than trusting it to guess what you meant.
This trips people up specifically with division mixed into a longer expression — something like 10 + 6 / 2 reads as 13 to a calculator that follows standard order of operations (division before addition), not 8, even though it's tempting to read it left to right. If a formula you're copying from a textbook has a division bar over multiple terms, you need to wrap the whole numerator or denominator in parentheses yourself before typing it in — the calculator has no way to know where an invisible fraction bar was supposed to be.
Most calculators (including our scientific calculator) have memory keys (M+, M-, MR, MC). When a problem has several steps — like calculating tax and tip separately before adding them to a bill — storing an intermediate result in memory avoids retyping numbers and the copy errors that come with it.
The habit worth building here is using memory recall (MR) instead of re-reading a number off the screen and retyping it. Every manual retype is a chance to transpose digits — reading 1,462 and typing 1,426 is an easy, common slip. If the calculator already has the number stored, let it hand the number back to you instead of trusting your eyes and fingers to do it twice.
A leftover number from a previous calculation is one of the most common sources of wrong answers, especially on shared or borrowed calculators. Get in the habit of hitting clear (C or AC) before starting a new problem, not just when something looks off.
There's a difference between the C key and the AC key on most calculators worth knowing: C usually clears just the last entry, while AC (all clear) wipes the whole calculation including anything sitting in memory. If your answers are coming out consistently too high or too low by a fixed amount across several problems, a stale memory value — not a math mistake — is a common, overlooked cause.
Calculators are great at arithmetic but don't know your units. This is the single most common mistake we see in mortgage math specifically: an annual interest rate has to be divided by 12 before it goes into a monthly-payment formula, and it's easy to forget that step when you're moving fast. The calculator will happily compute a confident, wrong answer with the wrong units — it has no idea your 6.5% was supposed to be monthly, not annual. When a result looks suspiciously large or small, units are the first thing worth checking, before you assume you made an arithmetic error.
Calculators round mid-calculation differently than you might round on paper, and for multi-step problems that difference can compound. If you're carrying a result through several more steps, keep as many decimal places as the calculator gives you and only round the very last, final answer — rounding too early is a quiet source of "off by a little" errors that are hard to trace back.
